Academic Alliance for Artificial Intelligence Policy Launches at the 2023 AI Policy Symposium

The Academic Alliance for AI Policy officially launched on October 27, 2023 at the AI Policy Symposium in Washington, D.C.

The AI Policy Symposium, held Oct. 26-27 in the nation’s capital, was organized by two Syracuse University institutes — the Autonomous Systems Policy Institute (ASPI) and the Institute for Democracy, Journalism and Citizenship (IDJC). The institutes welcomed researchers, academic leaders, policymakers and journalists from across the nation for discussions in Washington, D.C., about innovations, vulnerabilities and the future of artificial intelligence.

The event served as the venue to launch the Academic Alliance for AI Policy, a cross-institutional academic advisory body formed to serve as a resource for lawmakers, policymakers and others seeking to regulate and better understand AI. Hamid Ekbia, director of ASPI and a University Professor, will lead the alliance.

The new alliance on AI policy was the focus of discussions at the symposium. The event kicked off with a luncheon, where academics met with Senate AI caucus members and staffers. Gretchen Ritter, Provost and Vice Chancellor of Syracuse University gave opening remarks. We also heard from Senator Rounds of South Dakota and Senator Booker of New Jersey. For the remainder of the symposium, participants also discussed how AI will affect the future of work, and the impact AI will have on the 2024 presidential election.

Based at the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, ASPI is a Universitywide initiative focused on the intersection of technology, policy and society that boasts dozens of affiliated faculty researchers across disciplines.

The IDJC engages in nonpartisan research, teaching and public dialogue aimed at strengthening trust in news media, governance and society. It is a joint initiative of the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and the Maxwell School.

We invite colleagues from all backgrounds and all types of academic institutions — from community and liberal arts colleges to R-1 universities — to join us in the AAAIP initiative. Please email aaaip@syr.edu if you are interested.
